Helping students with their Internal Assessment (IA) can be a big task for any teacher. However, you can make it much easier by using these simple tips from experienced educators.
1. Pick Topics They Love
Encourage students to choose a topic they are truly interested in. When students like what they are studying, they are more likely to work hard and put in more effort. You can start with group discussions to help them find and share fun ideas.
2. Use Small “Checkpoints”
Instead of doing everything at once, break the IA into small steps. These “checkpoints” help students focus on one thing at a time, like writing their research question or picking their data. This also allows you to give quick feedback so they can fix mistakes early.
3. Practice with “Mini-Projects”
Before the real IA, let students try “mini-IA” projects. These small tasks help them get used to the rules, learn how to meet deadlines, and practice their writing without feeling too stressed.
4. Make the Research Question Clear
The hardest part for many students is writing a research question that isn’t too big. You can help them by:
- Asking guiding questions to help them focus.
- Brainstorming together to narrow down a broad topic.
- Showing them examples of good and bad questions so they know what to do.
5. Be Clear and Start Small
Make sure students understand exactly how they are graded. If a student finds writing difficult, ask them to start with short paragraphs first. As they get better, they can slowly write longer pieces. This helps them feel more confident and organized.
